American artist Moby’s 1999 album Play immediately came to mind when trying to think of a vocal sample I could use for this project. Moby used field recordings of African American gospel music to find vocal samples for his dance and ambient tracks. This is the the original 1960 Bessie Jones recording of ‘Honey’.
This is the Moby version using the vocal sample.
I’m thinking of also using a track by Bessie Jones to sample. They are rich and sonically dense meaning that there’s a variety of sounds to choose from. I’ve chosen to begin experimenting with the track ‘You Better Mind’. While it only consists of vocals and clapping it contains a lot of depth.
